Rosemary Oil: A Mother’s Miracle Hair Elixir?

Ah, the forth-trimester. That magical time when just as you find yourself squeezing back into your pre-pregnancy jeans, mother nature strikes again and there's more hair in your hairbrush than on your head. But we think we've found a herbal hero - rosemary oil.

Hair loss.

First off, let’s talk about hair loss. Hair loss after having a baby is usually due to hormonal changes. During pregnancy, elevated levels of hormones like estrogen extend the growth phase of hair, leading to thicker and shinier locks (yay!). However, after giving birth, hormone levels drop rapidly, causing lots of hairs to enter the shedding phase all at once (boo!). This condition is known as postpartum telogen effluvium (yeah, we can't pronounce it either). Additionally, factors like stress and lack of sleep can contribute to hair loss. The good new is, is that this shedding is usually temporary, and most women see their hair return to normal within six to twelve months.

Rosemary oil benefits.

But who wants to wait six to twelve months?! Enter rosemary oil, the enchanting potion that promises to transform your post-baby hair tragedy into a mane worthy of a shampoo advert. Apparently, you can forget those expensive treatments; all you need is a few drops and a dash of optimism (and perhaps a blindfold to avoid looking at the hairbrush).

Rumor has it that it can stimulate hair follicles, increase circulation, and—if you believe the hype—unlock the secret door to hair growth faster than your toddler can dismantle a Lego tower. Just imagine: your hair could go from “meh” to “marvellous,” all while you juggle a baby, a toddler, and a slight caffeine addiction.

How to use it.

How do you actually use this wonder oil? It’s simple! Mix a few drops into your favorite carrier oil (because we’re fancy like that) or, like  we prefer, mix a few drops in with your shampoo (we suggest shampooing twice, the first time without the oil and then a second time with it), and give yourself a scalp massage while pretending to be at a spa instead of hiding from your kids. It’s a win-win: you get some “me time” and a potential return to your pre-baby hair glory.

Is it worth the hype?

Now, for the skeptics out there. while rosemary oil may not cure every hair woe (or the daily chaos that is motherhood), it does contain rich compounds that can nourish your scalp, improving overall hair health. And while more research is needed to fully understand its effectiveness, many people (yes, we see you 'Hair-fluencers') have hailed it a secret potion for hair loss, so it does offer a glimmer of hope. After all, let’s face it, after surviving pregnancy, childbirth, and the relentless demands of a tiny human, we deserve a few glimmers of hope—and fabulous hair.

Our opinion.

The science may not be definitive yet, but for the price (you can pick one up for less than a tenner - we've linked our favourites at the bottom of this page) and considering how easy it is to incorporate into your normal routine (who's got time for anything complicated?), we think it's a potential winner! So, here’s to rosemary oil: the aromatic ally in our post-pregnancy battle for luscious locks! It might not bring back the hair of your youth, but with a little patience and some enthusiastic scalp massages, you just might find yourself sporting a mane that says, “I survived pregnancy—and I’m still fabulous!”. Even if there is the potential for you to smell like a roast dinner. Now, if only it could also help with the under-eye bags…
